Job Overview

Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is seeking an outstanding clinical leader to join us as our inaugural Chief Research Information Officer (CRIO).

This is an exciting opportunity to shape the future of health data and informatics research within one of the world's leading specialist eye hospitals. The successful candidate will provide strategic leadership for research informatics, ensuring the ethical, secure and impactful use of data to accelerate innovation, improve patient outcomes and strengthen partnerships across the NHS, academia and industry.

This role may suit an established Consultant, Academic Clinician, NIHR Fellow or other senior clinical researcher with a strong track record in health data research and informatics who is looking to influence strategy at a national and international level. We welcome applications from individuals at different stages of their clinical academic career who can demonstrate the required experience, leadership capability and expertise in research informatics.

Key Responsibilities Include

• Providing strategic leadership for clinical data and informatics research across the Trust.
• Leading the development of research data infrastructure, standards and interoperability.
• Overseeing governance arrangements for the secondary use of Trust data for research purposes.
• Chairing the Research Data Management Committee.
• Ensuring compliance with information governance, data protection and regulatory requirements.
• Building and maintaining strategic partnerships with NHS organisations, universities, research funders, charities and industry partners.
• Supporting the development of future leaders in health data research through scholarship and fellowship opportunities.
• Promoting patient and public involvement in health data research and innovation activities.
• Providing expert advice on health data research, governance and informatics strategy.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities

We are looking for an influential and collaborative leader with substantial expertise in health data research and informatics. You will be passionate about delivering high-quality research, committed to the highest standards of governance and motivated by the opportunity to translate data into meaningful improvements for patients, services and research discovery.

Person specification

Education / Qualifications

Essential criteria

• Full GMC registration (with a ‘Licence to Practise’)
• Formal training in some aspects of clinical or research informatics e.g. NHS Digital Academy, Masters in Informatics, etc.

Desirable criteria

• Higher Degree (e.g. MD or PhD

Experience

Essential criteria

• Senior leadership experience in health data/informatics (academia, NHS or industry) with proven impact in research and innovation.
• Proven track record as Chief Investigator or Principal Investigator related to HRA approvals for secondary use of routinely collected NHS data in research (e.g., IRAS study types: “Study limited to working with data (specific project only)” and/or “research database”).

Desirable criteria

• Proven track record of navigating the HRA CAG (Section 251) approval process

Knowledge

Essential criteria

• Deep understanding of health data standards (e.g DICOM for imaging metadata consistency)
