Orthopaedic Nurse Practitioner

The Directorate of Trauma and Orthopaedics is committed to delivering high-quality, patient-centred care through innovation, collaboration and continuous service improvement. We are seeking a motivated and compassionate registered Nurse or Allied Health Professional to join our multidisciplinary team and support the development of patient pathways and experience.

The post provides an opportunity to work across two hospital sites, delivering specialist care to elective and trauma orthopaedic patients alongside Orthopaedic Practitioners, nurses, therapists, consultants and the wider MDT.

Our service includes three inpatient wards caring for patients with traumatic musculoskeletal injuries, elective surgery, post-operative recovery and rehabilitation. Fracture clinics provide trauma and elective services for adults and children, supported by plaster room and MDT services.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, proactive practitioner with excellent communication, organisational and interpersonal skills, who can work independently and collaboratively. A commitment to evidence-based care, professional development, service improvement and excellent patient experience is essential.

This development opportunity offers support to achieve relevant competencies and qualifications, including clinical skills and Non-Medical Prescribing. Where required, the successful applicant will initially be appointed at Band 6, with progression following successful completion of the programme.

Main duties of the job

The Band 6/7 Ward Practitioner will work autonomously within the Orthopaedic Directorate, providing daily clinical review of inpatients across both sites.

The post holder will assess patients, monitor and act upon clinical results and diagnostic investigations, identify and elevate clinical concerns, support discharge planning and coordinate multidisciplinary care.

They will work closely with consultants, junior doctors, nursing and therapy teams to optimise patient flow, improve continuity of care, enhance patient safety and support the delivery of high-quality patient-centred care.

Job responsibilities

To coordinate the delivery and development of the specialist service through the use of effective evidence-based practice in line with agreed national standards for patients safety and monitoring.

To contribute to the organisation of multidisciplinary, patient centred care.

To be accountable for the planning and delivery of safe, effective and compassionate patient care in relation to dedicated pathways of care, working as an autonomous practitioner within the specialism.

To provide specialist clinical advice and support to patients and clinical staff withinthe Trust on the assessment, management and care of patients within the specialist area.

To continuously improve clinical care standards in line with the clinical governance framework.

To exercise accountability as set out in the NMC/HCPC Code.

To ensure effective communication internally and externally regarding patient care and resources.

Provide education and training to clinical staff across the Trust. Provide expert specialist clinical advice and support to patients and clinical staff withinthe Trust on the management and care of patients within the specialist area.

To provide direct access for patients, either face to face or telephone consultation.

To represent the service nationwide.

To play a key role in ensuring that national and local standards/targets for specialist area are met.

To manage/lead practitioner led clinics in relation to reviewing patients and play a key role in optimising complex treatment regimes, facilitating hospital discharge and preventing avoidable hospital admissions.

To undertake research relevant to the needs of the specialist area.

Qualifications

• Registered Nurse or Allied Health Professional.
• Degree in nursing studies or relevant clinical degree.
• Mentorship certificate/Practice Assessor training or
• Clinical skills accreditation.
• Non-medical prescribing or willingness to complete.
• Leadership and Management course.
• Qualification in specialty.

Experience

• Experience of care delivery.
• Experience of the specialism.
• Experience of leading a team/supporting junior staff.
• Evidence of innovation in practice.
• Evidence of change management.
• Evidence of practice development.
• Experience of coordinating care for a caseload of patients.

Skills and Knowledge

• Awareness of national health and social care policy.
• Knowledge of best practice in area of specialism.
• Thorough understanding of expanded roles/professional practice
• issues.
• Clinical teaching experience.
• Ability to provide and receive complex, sensitive or contentious
• information, where persuasive, motivational, negotiating, training,
• empathic or reassurance skills are required.
• Able to work without supervision.
• Competent in the use of IT packages.
• Evidence of competency in relation to clinical practices
• appropriate to the post.
