Act as the Company’s hands‑on technical owner for AI and large language model (LLM) based solutions, designing, building and deploying practical applications – such as retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), document processing and copilot-style tools – that improve operational efficiency, customer experience and decision-making.
As the Company’s primary technical owner of AI/LLM delivery, provide input and judgement on architecture, vendor selection and implementation approach, working closely with the Head of IT and business stakeholders to prioritise and deliver high-value use cases, escalating major decisions as needed.
Thereby helping the Company build practical, well-engineered AI capability that supports its ambitious growth plans.

Key Role Accountabilities
Technical planning and execution:
- Provide technical input to the Head of IT on near-term AI/LLM priorities and use cases, translating business needs into a practical, deliverable plan of work.
LLM Application Engineering
- Design, build and deploy LLM-based applications, including retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), document processing and copilot-style tools
- Build and maintain retrieval pipelines, integrating vector databases and knowledge sources to ground LLM outputs in Company data
- Integrate AI/LLM solutions with existing systems, platforms and workflows via APIs
- Evaluate and select appropriate LLM providers, frameworks and vendor platforms for each use case
- Prototype and rapidly test new AI capabilities to assess their applicability to the business
- Identify opportunities to apply AI and automation to improve operational efficiency and customer experience
- Partner with Operations, Customer Solutions and other functions to understand business problems and translate them into AI-driven solutions
- Build and deploy generative AI tools such as chatbots, document processing and copilot-style assistants
- Support wider process automation initiatives, combining AI with existing workflows and systems
Solution Quality & Evaluation
- Ensure data and knowledge sources used for retrieval and grounding are accurate, well-governed and fit for purpose
- Monitor the performance, accuracy and reliability of AI/LLM solutions in production, tuning prompts, retrieval and configuration as required
- Implement testing and evaluation frameworks to assess LLM output quality, including for hallucination and relevance
- Document solution design, assumptions and limitations clearly for technical and non-technical audiences
Process Improvement & Systems
- Establish good engineering practice for deploying and maintaining AI/LLM applications, including version control, testing and monitoring
- Champion best practice in AI engineering, code quality and documentation
- Drive automation of recurring or manual tasks across the business using AI where appropriate
- Evaluate and recommend AI/LLM tools, platforms and vendors, providing technical judgement on build vs. Buy decisions
Knowledge Sharing
- Act as a technical point of reference for AI within the team, sharing practical knowledge of tools and techniques with colleagues.
- Provide guidance to colleagues on the safe and effective use of AI tools and techniques
- Share knowledge of emerging AI trends and technologies relevant to the business
- Support the Head of IT with technical explanations of AI capabilities, limitations and risk
Compliance and Risk Management
- Ensure AI/LLM solutions are developed and deployed responsibly and in compliance with relevant policies and regulations.
- Ensure AI/LLM solutions comply with relevant data protection, privacy and AI governance requirements, including when using third-party LLM providers
- Follow responsible AI principles, considering bias, fairness, transparency and security in solution design
- Support internal controls and risk assessments relating to AI systems and third‑party AI tools
- Escalate risks relating to data, models or AI tools to the Head of IT in a timely manner
Vendor and Technical Stakeholder Management
- Support relationships with AI/LLM vendors and technology partners, providing technical input to inform vendor selection and ongoing management.
- Provide technical evaluation of AI/LLM vendors and technology partners to inform selection and contracting decisions
- Act as a technical point of contact for AI/LLM vendors on integration and delivery matters
- Communicate complex technical concepts clearly to non-technical stakeholders across the business
- Support the Head of IT in AI-related discussions with business stakeholders as required
Your Experience
- Degree calibre or equivalent in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, Mathematics or a related field
- Proven years’ experience in software or data engineering, including recent (last 12 months) hands‑on delivery of LLM-based / generative AI solutions
- Relevant cloud or AI certifications desirable (e.g. Azure AI Engineer Associate, AWS Certified Machine Learning – Specialty)
- Experience contributing to technical architecture and vendor decisions, ideally within logistics, supply chain or a similar fast‑paced sector
- Comfortable taking ownership of AI delivery, with the confidence to exercise judgement and elevate where needed
- Hands‑on experience building LLM applications such as RAG pipelines, document processing, copilots or conversational AI
- Practical experience with LLM APIs and platforms (e.g. OpenAI, Azure OpenAI, Anthropic) and orchestration frameworks (e.g. LangChain, LlamaIndex)
- Experience with vector databases and retrieval architectures
- Strong programming skills in Python, with the ability to design and build production‑grade applications
- Experience with cloud platforms (e.g. Azure, AWS, GCP) and their AI services
- Sound understanding of prompt engineering and techniques to improve LLM output quality and reliability
- Good architecture and vendor evaluation judgement, with the ability to make well‑reasoned build‑vs‑buy recommendations
- Excellent problem‑solving skills, with the ability to translate business problems into technical solutions
- Excellent communicator, able to explain technical concepts to non‑technical stakeholders
- Self‑motivated with the ability to work under continuous pressure and meet defined deadlines
