Job description

Estimator - Structural Steel

Location: Leeds
Salary: Dependent on experience
Job Type: Permanent, Full-Time

A good estimate is where a successful project starts.

This is an opportunity for a commercially aware Estimator to join an established structural steelwork specialist, working on a varied range of projects from straightforward building frames through to more complex structural steelwork.

You'll be responsible for taking enquiries from initial review through to detailed tender, assessing drawings and specifications, identifying commercially viable opportunities and working closely with clients and internal teams to make sure projects are priced accurately and competitively.

The Role

As an Estimator, you'll play an important role in the front end of the business, helping to identify the right opportunities and ensuring tenders are prepared accurately and efficiently.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Managing incoming enquiries and reviewing opportunities for commercial viability
  • Working from detailed drawings, specifications and project information
  • Preparing accurate and detailed estimates for clients
  • Reviewing quantities, materials, labour and other project requirements
  • Supporting the preparation and submission of tenders
  • Liaising with clients throughout the estimating and tender process
  • Working closely with Design, Contracts, Production and other internal departments
  • Building and maintaining strong relationships with existing clients
  • Supporting the development of new client relationships and business opportunities
  • Managing multiple enquiries and tenders while working to tight deadlines
  • Ensuring estimates are commercially competitive while remaining achievable
  • Providing clear and accurate information to support successful project delivery

What We're Looking For

We're looking for someone who understands the estimating process and can confidently work through technical drawings and specifications.

You'll ideally have:

  • Previous experience in an estimating role
  • Experience within structural steel, steel fabrication, construction or a related industry
  • A practical understanding of the estimating and tendering process
  • The ability to interpret detailed technical drawings and specifications
  • Strong commercial awareness
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills
  • The ability to manage a varied workload and multiple deadlines
  • Good organisational and time-management skills
  • A relevant technical or engineering qualification would be advantageous

Structural steel experience is desirable, but candidates from closely related engineering or construction environments may also be considered.

Why Consider This Role?

This is a great opportunity to join an established structural steel specialist with decades of experience delivering projects across the UK and Europe.

You'll have the opportunity to work across a varied project portfolio, develop strong relationships with clients and play a key role in deciding which projects the business takes forward.

The role would suit an Estimator who enjoys the commercial side of construction and wants to develop their career within a well-established engineering and structural steel environment.

Alongside a competitive salary dependent on experience, the package includes:

  • Company pension
  • Sick pay scheme
  • Health plan
  • Cycle to work scheme
  • Save As You Earn share scheme
