You will work alongside senior DBS and Business Line management, enabling HSBC’s global businesses and functions to support the HSBC Group strategy including our continued investment in technology to transform and grow.  Our legal strategy is to lead our stakeholders through a complex and dynamic legal and regulatory environment.  By providing world class and commercial legal advice we partner with our stakeholders – the HSBC Group’s Digital Business Services Functions (DBS) - to help them achieve their objectives. 

We are looking to appoint a Managing Associate General Counsel for a new people manager role within the DBS Legal team to be based in the UK.  This person will be an experienced Technology lawyer with an enthusiasm for change and strong financial services experience.

Responsibilities: 

  • The team operates in a semi-agile model where responsibilities are shared across the GCB3 managers.  Responsibilities will change from time to time to reflect business needs.  As an indication, key day 1 responsibilities for this role will include:
  • Legal Business Partner to Chief Technology Officer and Cyber Information Security Officer
  • Legal representative on the Group Technology Risk Committee
  • Leads cross-functional collaboration with Data Privacy lawyers including on cyber matters 
  • Emphasis in supporting technology with the heightened regulatory focus on critical IT, cyber and operational resilience
  • Line manager for 4-6 GCB4 team members, supporting and empowering them in their roles
  • Broader Legal Function collaboration and stakeholder management supporting the DBS Legal senior leadership team and General Counsel for DBS 
  • Shared team management responsibilities including in relation to workload and resource management, priority activities and support, team planning, engagement, learning and continuous improvement
  • Provide leadership and direction to the members of the DBS Legal team, as a senior manager with 1:1 impact with direct reports and a role model working across the wider global team
Requirements

To be successful in this role the following would be relevant and helpful experience: 

  • This is a key management role (in a large team) so experience of managing, supporting and empowering others is essential
  • Technology, outsourcing and financial services legal experience is essential
  • Experience in managing and navigating critical service and supplier risks in FS, including cyber, cloud, AI, operational resilience, outsourcing as well as broad commercial 
  • A high performing team player with experience and desire to develop others
  • Proven robust stakeholder management skills at a senior level demonstrating gravitas and providing confidence
  • Strategy legal advice background
  • Experience in relationship building and engagement with regulatory and law enforcement agencies regarding cyber security
  • experience in contracting (incl commercial and M&A) is sought.  
  • Intelligent, conscientious and confident problem solver
  • Skilled communicator with a track record of influencing a wide range of audiences ensuring alignment and common purpose
  • Excellent written communication skills and ability to absorb complex information and simplify
  • Ability to operate at pace and adapt to a fast changing internal and external environment

Other information: 

  • Our preferred location is our Leeds UK Hub for Digital Business Services Legal 
  • We will accept applications to be based at our UK Headquarters at 8 Canada Square, Canary Wharf but the Leeds location is our preference.  
  • Travel between Leeds and London office is required
  • Office-based with discretionary home-working options (typically two days per week based on a 5 day working week)
