Mechanical Design Engineer – Water Industry (Permanent or Outside IR35)


My client is a well-established engineering design consultancy supporting major programmes within the UK regulated water sector. Due to continued growth and a strong AMP workload, they are seeking an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to support the delivery of high-quality mechanical design packages across clean and wastewater projects.


This opportunity is open to both permanent candidates and Outside IR35 contractors.


The Role / Assignment

  • Produce mechanical design calculations and drawings for water industry schemes
  • Deliver design outputs that meet safety, quality, and regulatory requirements
  • Coordinate and support CAD technicians
  • Prepare scopes and review outputs from subcontract M&E design teams
  • Liaise with equipment suppliers and manufacturers, including technical review of tenders
  • Prepare design investigations, reports, and technical specifications
  • Ensure compliance with relevant technical, professional, and water company standards
  • Implement and record design changes in line with project controls
  • Estimate design hours and support project planning
  • Attend and present at design and project meetings


About You

  • 5+ years’ mechanical design experience in the UK water industry
  • Experience across wastewater and clean water, infrastructure and non-infrastructure projects
  • Strong hydraulic design capability
  • Understanding of construction methods, materials, and buildability
  • Knowledge of engineering drawing standards
  • Degree, HND, or equivalent experience from technician level
  • Chartered Engineer or working towards chartership
  • Confident IT user with relevant design software experience
