Job description
Piper Maddox are supporting a global aerospace engineering organisation with the hire of a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join their R&D Technical function in Buckinghamshire.
The business is a recognised leader in aircraft electrical systems and is playing a central role in the electrification of aviation, spanning power generation, distribution, motors and hybrid-electric propulsion technologies.
The UK site is a key engineering hub focused on smart motor and power generation technologies, supporting both established aerospace platforms and next-generation electromechanical systems.
This is a senior-level mechanical design position with real ownership.
You will lead and deliver engineering work packages across R&D and R&T programmes, developing robust mechanical solutions for rotating electrical equipment — ensuring designs are technically sound, manufacturable, cost-conscious and aligned to programme milestones.
The role blends hands-on design responsibility with technical leadership and cross-functional coordination.
Key responsibilities:
- Developing mechanical design solutions for aerospace motor and power generation technologies
- Owning or supporting engineering work packages from concept through validation
- Overseeing and approving design solutions delivered by other engineers
- Producing and maintaining CAD models, drawings and BOMs to aerospace standards
- Delivering design assurance documentation, calculations and stress/thermal justification
- Supporting root cause investigations and technical risk reduction activities
- Driving Design-to-Cost and Design-for-Manufacture/Assembly principles
- Providing mentoring and technical guidance within multi-disciplinary project teams
You’ll work closely with Mechanical Design, Stress & Thermal, Industrialisation, Supply Chain, V&V and Quality teams to ensure mature and robust engineering solutions are delivered against programme targets.
We’re looking for:
- Degree-qualified Mechanical, Automotive or Aeronautical Engineer (or equivalent experience)
- Strong electromechanical design background, ideally within rotating equipment (shafts, bearings, seals, structures)
- Experience delivering engineering work packages and supervising engineers technically
- Substantial experience using 3D CAD (CATIA, NX or similar)
- Solid understanding of materials and production methods
- Ability to plan, prioritise and deliver against defined milestones
Experience with high-speed motors or power generation systems would be advantageous.
This is a technically influential position within a business heavily invested in future propulsion and electrification technologies. It offers the opportunity to operate at a senior engineering level while remaining hands-on in product development.
