Trainee Education Mental Health Practitioner (EMHP) - NorthCumbria Region


This is a unique "Recruit-to-Train" opportunity. You will be employed full-time, earn a salary from day one, and have your postgraduate training at Northumbria University fully funded. - Successful candidates will be based on their geographical location:


  • West: Whitehaven, Egremont, Workington, Cockermouth, Keswick, and Maryport.
  • East: Carlisle, Penrith, Eden, Brampton, and Dalston.

The Role at a Glance


  • Salary: £27,417 per annum & excellent benefits package
  • Location: North Cumbria (Teams covering West: Whitehaven to Maryport | East: Carlisle to Penrith)
  • Contract: Permanent, 37 hours per week
  • Training Start: September 2026 (delivered via online and in-person sessions in Newcastle)

Are you passionate about the emotional well-being of children and young people? Following an exciting expansion by NHS England, we are looking for 8 dedicated Trainees to join our North Cumbria Mental Health Support Teams (MHST).

As a Trainee EMHP, you won't just be studying; youll be making a tangible difference. You will deliver evidence-based, low-intensity Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) interventions directly within schools, helping pupils navigate the challenges of modern life.

Who We Are Looking For


Essential


Demonstratable ability to work at a graduate / postgraduate academic level, e.g., minimum 2.2 degree

Have relevant experience in child development or education, emotional well-being, and mental health.


Desirable


Have a postgraduate related qualification (i.e., Education, Childcare, Mental Health, Social Care, etc.)

Experience working in a mental health setting or in education settings


You dont need a lifetime of experience, but you do need vision, empathy, and resilience. We welcome applications from those who have worked with children in formal or informal settings (e.g., volunteering, youth work, or education).


Key Requirements:


  • The Drive to Learn: You must be able to secure a place at Northumbria University (we will support you through this).
  • Communication: An ability to listen to and connect with young people.
  • Awareness: An understanding of the issues facing vulnerable families, such as disadvantage and mental health barriers.
  • Reliability: Excellent record-keeping skills and the ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
