Job description

Job Summary
Go back Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
Closing date: 02 July 2026

We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic Trainee Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP) to join our established Surgical ACP team in the Surgical Division. This developmental post supports an experienced registered nurse to progress through a structured ACP training pathway towards a Master's level qualification and advanced clinical practice competencies.

The successful candidate will develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours to practice autonomously across the four pillars of advanced practice: clinical practice, leadership and management, education, and research. The Surgical ACP team delivers high‐quality, patient‐centred care across a range of surgical services including ward‐based care, Level 1 care, surgical ambulatory care and on‐call activity.

Main Duties of the Job
The post holder will undertake a 3‐year Master's programme in Advanced Clinical Practice while also working clinically alongside doctors, ACP colleagues and supervisors. The role is aimed at developing competence to assess, diagnose and treat patients, eventually working autonomously and making clinical decisions in accordance with agreed pathways.

Job Responsibilities
Clinical Practice
With support from supervisors, the trainee will learn to assess, diagnose and treat patients within their care. The trainee will evaluate responses to treatments, initiate changes under supervision, work within their competence, seek support when unsure, and communicate effectively with patients and the Multi‐Disciplinary Team (MDT). They will request and perform simple diagnostic procedures, request pathology tests and chest X‐rays under guidance, review deteriorating patients and initiate management plans, maintain accurate patient records, and provide clinical knowledge to colleagues and patients.

Leadership and Management
The trainee will act as a role model, demonstrating effective leadership, fostering clear team roles, advocating responsive care, and contributing to leadership development. They will share knowledge with pre‐ and post‐registered staff, respond to complaints, and ensure continuous improvement of practice.

Education
In addition to the Master's programme, the trainee will identify and complete speciality‐specific competencies, maintain a personal portfolio of learning, undertake individual professional development, disseminate good practice, and act as educator, supervisor, coach and mentor. Compliance with Trust mandatory training will be ensured.

Research
The trainee will engage in research activity, adhering to good practice guidance, audit and evaluate own and others' practice, develop governance systems, and participate in professional and policy‐making activities. Liaison with other ACPs will develop corporate viewpoints and support implementation of policies and guidelines.
