Locum Consultant Medical Oncologist – Lung

University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (UCLH) is seeking to appoint a Locum Consultant Medical Oncologist for a 12‑month fixed‑term post to join our nationally and internationally recognised oncology service.

Main duties of the job

Provide consultant level medical oncology care for patients with Lung cancer across University College London Hospital and Whittington Hospital, including delivery of systemic anti‑cancer therapy and specialist clinical input in both inpatient and outpatient settings.

Active participation in multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings, outpatient clinics, ward rounds, and on‑call and ward rotas as required.

Contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate education, supervising and training specialty trainees.

Play an active role in governance, service development, and continuous improvement within the wider oncology department.

Demonstrate flexibility to support service evolution across both UCLH and Whittington Hospital.

Person specification

Qualifications / Certification

  • Medical degree and completion of General Professional Training, or equivalent.
  • Higher academic degree (MD or PhD) or equivalent level of attainment in research publications.
  • Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (or equivalent).
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register, or within 12 months of obtaining a Certificate of Completion of Training in an appropriate specialty at the time of interview.
  • Non‑UK trained doctors must provide evidence of eligibility for full GMC registration and entry on the Specialist Register in Medical Oncology.

Experience

  • Experience and commitment to multidisciplinary working.
  • Wide experience in managing treatment and follow‑up of patients with cancer.
  • Experience in teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Skills

  • Ability to conduct original research leading to publications in peer‑reviewed journals.
  • Clinical research skills and GCP certification.
  • Teaching ability in a clinical setting.
  • Workload organisation, prioritisation, delegation, and supervision of staff.
  • Effective teamwork and initiative.
  • Leadership and service development skills.
  • Excellent communication skills, verbal and written, with good command of written and spoken English.
  • Ability to attract grant funding and translate research activities into clinical and organisational contexts.

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of the Clinical Governance framework of the NHS (including research governance).
  • Understanding of NHS resource and budgetary management principles.

General

  • Highest ethical and professional standards in research, education and clinical practice.
  • Member of the Medical Defence Organisation.
