The postholder will have significant involvement in the delivery of cardiac anaesthesia both during daytime cover and as part of the cardiac consultant on-call rota. The department covers most anaesthesia specialities, and a dynamic individual with supplementary interests would be welcomed.
It is envisaged that the appointee will contribute to the development and delivery of aspects of these services depending upon their interests and experience.
The remit of the post holder will be to work flexibly within the multi–disciplinary team providing and further developing care for patients requiring anaesthesia particularly within cardiothoracic surgery. In addition, the individual will be required to play an active role in the general workload of the Anaesthetic Department while having a significant commitment to teaching and training of junior staff.
Main duties of the job
This post offers an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated and dynamic consultant anaesthetist to join a multidisciplinary team delivering high-quality anaesthetic services within a specialist cardiothoracic environment. The successful candidate will play a key role in the provision and ongoing development of cardiac anaesthesia services, contributing to both elective and emergency care pathways while supporting the delivery of safe, effective, and patient-centred care.
The postholder will have significant involvement in all aspects of cardiac anaesthesia, participating in daytime clinical activity and contributing to the cardiac anaesthesia consultant on-call rota. Working within a busy and complex clinical setting, they will provide expert perioperative care for patients undergoing a range of cardiothoracic procedures, ensuring the highest standards of clinical practice, patient safety, and outcomes. The role offers the opportunity to work alongside experienced multidisciplinary teams to deliver seamless and coordinated care throughout the patient journey.
In addition to their specialist cardiac responsibilities, the successful candidate will contribute to the wider workload of the Anaesthetic Department. The department provides a comprehensive range of anaesthetic services across multiple specialties, and applications are welcomed from individuals with additional clinical interests or expertise that may complement and enhance the existing service portfolio.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- Provision of a first class clinical service
- Effective leadership to all staff engaged in the specialty
- Sustaining and developing teaching and research in conjunction with King’s College London / KHP
- Undertaking all work in accordance with the Trust’s procedures and operating policies
- Conducting clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements and within the parameters of the Trust’s service plans
- Maintaining the confidence of business plans and development strategies formulated for the specialty, the Division or the Trust

Person specification
Qualifications
- Full Registration with GMC and completed subspecialty training programme in anaesthesia at time of appointment or equivalent experience.
- On the specialist register at the point of taking up the post
Training and Experience
- Wide experience and accredited training in most aspects of anaesthesia including cardiothoracic surgery and capable of delivering services appropriate to a large teaching hospital (e.g., maxillo‑facial surgery and Day Surgery) Advanced cardiac training/fellowship and experience in TOE (transoesophageal echocardiography)
- Proven post‑graduate experience in anaesthesia
- Experience of delivering Anaesthesia at Consultant level and supervising junior colleagues within that capacity.
- Accreditation in TOE (transoesophageal echocardiography).
Management and Leadership
- Experience in day to day organisation of anaesthetic services in a busy Teaching Hospital
- Able to demonstrate leadership capability within multi-disciplinary teams
- Familiarity with current structure of Health Service and conversant with recent initiatives and changes
Audit
- Thorough understanding of principles of medical audit. Must have undertaken and completed audit projects.
- Organisation of Audit/Journal Clubs and Morbidity & Mortality Meetings
Research and Publications
- Experience of clinical research.
- Publication of relevant peer reviewed papers in the field of Anaesthesia/ transplantation.

You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
