A t present, there are four full-time cardiac electrophysiology consultants (Dr Murgatroyd, Dr Scott, Dr Dhillon and Dr Gall who specializes in neurocardiology) and four visiting EP and device specialists. A highly motivated team of physiologists participates in all procedures and follow up. Two dedicated radiology practitioners (are part of the EP team, facilitating continuity of care.

An echo fellow is dedicated to the EP service, providing support for CRT pre-assessment and optimization, and TOE for ablation procedures as necessary. A team of three full time arrhythmia clinical nurse specialists coordinate admissions, provide support for patients, and conduct nurse led clinics in King's, in the community, and by telephone for follow ups. A fourth clinical nurse specialist coordinates the CRT service and device research protocols and a fifth is shared between the cardioversion and chest pain services.

Main duties of the job

The fellow will be expected to undertake his/her own projects in electrophysiology during the tenure of the post and there is a comprehensive database and computer/library facilities to assist in this regard.

Much of the week will be spent in the catheter lab and the fellow will also undertake high volume electrophysiology and pacing work. The successful candidate will do one/two outpatient clinics per week, concentrating on arrhythmia patients. The post is ideally suited to a trainee who is fully competent basic electrophysiology and device implantation.

There is on-call commitment on the acute general cardiology rota.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The EP fellow will be part of the arrhythmia team and will work closely with the EP Consultants and Nurse Specialists. This will involve responsibilities for the in-patients and attending outpatient clinics. The fellow will also be involved in delivery of our electrophysiology and device service and will receive training with the aim of becoming an independent operator by the end of the fellowship. He/she will undertake simple and complex EP lists with consultants and gain experience in SVT, AF and VE/VT ablation. We also offer training in CRT, SCID implantation and His-Bundle pacing. The appointee will have an opportunity to contribute to EP-based research. This will involve data collection, provision of information to patients, acquisition of informed consent and assisting during research study cases.

Education/Qualifications

  • Full registration with the GMC
  • MB BS (or equivalent)
  • MRCP part 1 (or equivalent)
  • MRCP part 2 (or equivalent)
  • PhD, MD (original research)
  • Other degrees/qualifications
  • Extensive experience in cardiology
  • Research experience, presentations, publications
  • ALS (or equivalent) within 2 years

Skills/Knowledge/Ability

  • Evidence of competence in care of cardiac patients at SpR level
  • Fully competent in pacing and transthoracic echocardiography
  • Basic EP and device experience
  • Evidence of participation and active involvement in an audit project
  • Experience and ability to work in multi-professional teams
  • Understanding of NHS, clinical governance & resource constraints; mgmt/financial awareness exp of committee work
  • Academic prizes and honours
  • Enthusiasm for teaching; exposure to different groups/teaching methods
