Job description
Health & Safety Manager – Major Civils / Rail Infrastructure
Location: London & Project Sites
We have an opportunity for an experienced Health & Safety Manager to join an established civil engineering contractor delivering a major infrastructure project in London, alongside other water and utilities schemes across the region.
You’ll be joining a 12-strong Health & Safety team, including two Regional Leads, within a financially stable business with secured frameworks and a strong pipeline of major infrastructure projects.
A key focus of the role will be a major multi-million-pound civils project involving the construction of new sewer infrastructure, with works interfacing with DLR, London Underground and Jubilee line infrastructure.
You’ll spend approximately three days per week on the main London project, with the remainder of your time supporting other water and pipeline projects.
This is a senior H&S role and we’re looking for someone with strong major civils experience, particularly around temporary works and rail interfaces, who is also comfortable managing and leading a safety team.
The Role
As Health & Safety Manager, you will:
- Manage and support members of the Health & Safety team.
- Provide H&S leadership across major civil engineering and infrastructure projects.
- Support works involving interfaces with operational rail and transport infrastructure.
- Provide H&S oversight around temporary works activities.
- Carry out regular site inspections, audits and safety reviews.
- Work closely with Project Managers, Site Managers and operational teams.
- Review RAMS, Construction Phase Plans and other H&S documentation.
- Lead and support accident, incident and near-miss investigations.
- Monitor subcontractor compliance and site working practices.
- Identify hazards, trends and areas for improvement.
- Support toolbox talks, safety briefings and workforce engagement.
- Help drive continuous improvement and maintain a strong safety culture across project teams.
About You
We’re looking for someone with:
- Strong temporary works experience.
- Previous rail experience, ideally involving projects interfacing with live or operational rail infrastructure.
- Previous experience as a Health & Safety Manager or in a senior H&S role within civil engineering, rail or major infrastructure.
- Experience managing or leading a safety team.
- A NEBOSH qualification.
- Strong experience working across complex construction sites.
- Good knowledge of UK Health & Safety legislation and construction regulations.
- Experience with audits, inspections, RAMS and incident investigations.
- The confidence to challenge unsafe practices while working collaboratively with site and project teams.
- A full UK driving licence and willingness to travel between project locations.
This is an opportunity to join an established contractor with a strong workload, a well-established H&S team and long-term infrastructure projects across London and the wider region.
Salary is £58,000 – £68,000 + car allowance + package, depending on experience.
Please apply and one of the team will be in touch.
