Health and Safety Lead

People Group is looking for a Health and Safety Lead

Job description

Role: Health & Safety Lead

Location: East London

Salary: £80,000 - £100,000 Per Annum / £500 - £550 Per Day CIS or Ltd

Opportunity:

We are seeking an experienced Health & Safety Lead to join a major specialist contractor delivering a high-profile data centre project in East London.

This is a key site-based leadership role, taking ownership of the Health & Safety function on a large-scale, technically complex project. The successful candidate will work closely with project delivery and senior leadership teams to drive the highest standards of health, safety and wellbeing across the site.

Unlike a traditional management contractor model, this project is being self-delivered, meaning the H&S Lead will have direct involvement with the delivery teams and workforce on site, playing a hands-on role in influencing safety culture and ensuring safe systems of work are embedded throughout the project lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage all Health & Safety activities across a major data centre construction project.
  • Act as the primary H&S point of contact for the project delivery team, senior management, workforce and relevant stakeholders.
  • Drive a proactive and positive Health & Safety culture across all site operations.
  • Work closely with construction, project and engineering teams to ensure safe planning and delivery of works.
  • Carry out site inspections, audits and risk assessments, ensuring compliance with company procedures and UK legislation.
  • Review and monitor RAMS, permits and safe systems of work.
  • Lead incident and accident investigations and ensure appropriate corrective actions are implemented.
  • Deliver toolbox talks, safety briefings and training where required.
  • Monitor H&S performance and produce reports for senior project and business leadership.
  • Ensure subcontractors and direct delivery teams meet required Health & Safety standards.
  • Identify potential risks and implement practical solutions before they impact project delivery.
  • Build strong relationships with site teams and promote continuous improvement across the project.

Candidate Requirements

  • Proven experience in a Health & Safety leadership role within construction.
  • Experience working on large-scale, complex construction projects.
  • Data centre, mission-critical, MEP or major infrastructure experience would be highly advantageous.
  • Experience working within a self-delivery contractor or principal contractor environment.
  • Strong understanding of UK Health & Safety legislation and CDM regulations.
  • NEBOSH Construction Certificate as a minimum; NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent highly desirable.
  • IOSH membership or working towards Chartered status would be advantageous.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to engage with site teams and influence a strong, practical safety culture.
  • Comfortable operating in a fast-paced, live construction environment.
