Trainee Wood Machinist / Workshop Assistant

Between £12.00 and £14.00 Per Hour

Job description

Trainee Wood Machinist / Workshop Assistant

Wilson Hardwoods Co — Ware, Hertfordshire

Full-time or part-time | Starting pay: £13 per hour

Wilson Hardwoods Co is looking for a reliable, practical person to join our growing hardwood supply business. This is an opportunity to learn woodworking skills and become involved in the day-to-day running of a timber workshop.

No previous experience is required. We’re looking for someone who is willing to learn, takes pride in their work and approaches every task with care.

The role

You’ll learn how to prepare and machine hardwood timber for customer orders, including planing, thicknessing, ripping and cross-cutting. Training will begin under close supervision, with progression to independent work once you have demonstrated that you can operate each machine safely and competently.

Your duties will include:

  • Measuring, selecting and preparing timber for customer orders.
  • Learning to operate woodworking machinery safely and accurately.
  • Sanding timber and checking the quality of finished pieces.
  • Sorting, stacking and organising timber and offcuts.
  • Loading and unloading timber safely.
  • Packing, labelling and preparing orders for dispatch.
  • Keeping the workshop clean, tidy and organised.
  • Cleaning machinery and carrying out basic routine maintenance following training and safe isolation procedures.
  • Making deliveries and collections in the company van, subject to a suitable driving licence and insurance approval.
  • Occasionally assisting with site carpentry work.

About you

You’ll be reliable, punctual and comfortable with practical work. You should be able to follow instructions, pay attention to measurements and detail, and take workshop safety seriously.

The role involves standing, moving timber and handling orders, with appropriate training and handling aids provided.

A driving licence is preferable but is not essential. Any previous experience in woodworking, carpentry, warehousing or a workshop would be useful, although full training will be provided.

What we offer

  • Full-time or part-time hours, to be agreed.
  • Starting pay of £13 per hour.
  • Practical training and the opportunity to develop woodworking and machining skills.
  • A varied role within a small, growing business.
  • An initial three-month probation period, with a pay increase following successful completion to reflect the skills learned and responsibilities taken on.
  • Potential for part-time hours to develop into a full-time role as the business grows.

To apply, please send your CV and a brief introduction explaining your interest in the role and your availability through Reed.
