A specialist school in Newbury is seeking a caring and enthusiastic Autism Teaching Assistant to join its team as soon as possible. This is an excellent opportunity for graduates, aspiring psychologists and individuals with experience in education, childcare or care who are keen to make a meaningful difference.

As an Autism Teaching Assistant , you will support pupils with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), helping them navigate the school day and engage with learning at their own pace. Some pupils may have additional communication, sensory or learning needs, meaning a patient, flexible and individualised approach is essential.

Working alongside experienced teachers and support staff, you will help create a structured and encouraging environment where pupils feel safe, understood and supported. You will also help pupils develop practical life skills, build relationships and become more confident in their daily activities.

As an Autism Teaching Assistant, your responsibilities will include:

Providing tailored 1:1 and small-group support to autistic pupils.

Supporting communication, social interaction and emotional regulation.

Helping pupils access classroom activities through adapted learning approaches.

Recognising individual sensory needs and supporting pupils with transitions.

Encouraging independence, confidence and positive relationships.

Working collaboratively with teachers and other professionals to support pupil development.

This Autism Teaching Assistant role is ideal for someone considering a career in psychology, teaching, occupational therapy or specialist education. Previous experience supporting autistic children is advantageous, but a compassionate attitude, willingness to learn and commitment to pupil wellbeing are equally important.
